Antilocapra Americana - Pronghorn Antelope - One of the fastest mammals - can reach speeds of up to 61 miles per hour and sustain speeds at 45 miles an hour for at least 4 miles.  Characterized by black horns with an anterior prong and curved tips; large eye; tan back with cream rump and underbelly; black muzzle and two white throat bars.  After the rut, male pronghorns shed their horns.  Males weigh 100-150 lbs. and grow up to 4.8 feet; females weigh 70-100 lbs.  Average lifespan is about 4-5 years but can live up to 14 years. Prefers plains, prairies and foothills along with areas with water and low growing vegetation.  Predators include the coyote, grizzly bear and bobcat.  At one time, 20 million to 40 million roamed the plains. Latest numbers show about half a million still survive.
