Odocoileus hemionus- Mule Deer - one that has large ears like a mule.   Coloring can range from a dark brown coat in the winter to a reddish to yellow-brown in summer. Horn arrangement is quite a bit different that of true deer.   Male's antlers branch into four prongs on either side. Males weigh approximately 400 lbs. and grow 6 feet in length; females 160 lbs. and 5 feet in length.  Can live up to 25 years in captivity; about 10 years in the wild.  Essentially forest and woodland animals, these browsers found along the West Coast and as far north as Juneau, Alaska and back into the western mountains. Mule Deer seek safety in herd numbers.   Predators include bear, coyote, lynx, wolf, mountain lion.
