Cervus canadensis - Elk/Wapiti - Wapiti is derived from a Shawnee Indian name meaning "white rump".  Second largest animal in the deer family.  Identified by majestic antlers, tawny brown coloring in the summer with darker brown head, neck, belly and legs in the winter.  Males grow to a length of approximately 9 feet and weigh up to 1,100 lbs. while females grow to about 8 feet and weigh up to 660lbs.  Longevity in the wild is 14-26 years.  Bugling bull elk at rutting season can be heard for miles.  Females are attracted to bulls whose bugle is the loudest and most frequent.  Found mostly in woodlands and open lands, mountain meadows, foothills and plains.  Diet consists of grasses, herbs, woody plants and bark from trees if grasses are scarce.  The North American Wapiti once roamed all over the northern half of the continent but is now found mostly in the Rockies and the Northwest.
