Haliaeetus leucocephalus - Bald Eagle. Identified by white-feathered head (attained after reaching 7 years of age) that appears bald when seen from a distance. 30-43 inches long with a wingspan of 78-96 inches. Found throughout North America from Alaska to Mexico. American Indians used the eagle as a symbol of the Thunderbird, mythical bird thought to cause thunder and lightning.
