Bison - Biso
n/Buffalo.
Identified by thick, shaggy, dark brown mane; large hump on shoulders; and short black
horns. Males weigh up to 2,000 lbs. and measure about 10-12 feet long; females weigh up to
1,100 lbs. and measures 6-7 feet long. They live 20 years in the wild but could be
up to 40 years. Range includes but not limited to mountainous area, open forests,
plains and grasslands. Puma, gray wolf and grizzly bear prey on the old and young.
At one time, 40-60 million buffalo roamed North American and ranged as far as the
Northwest Territories and were the mainstay of the Plains Indians. By early 1900's,
less than one thousand remained. White Buffalo considered sacred by Native American
Indians.
